1894 Wairarapa shipwreck

On the 29 of October in a heavy fog the liner Wairarapa steamed into cliffs on great barrier island, with the loss of 121 of it's 235 passengers and crew. They were rescued by another ship after 30 hours eating oranges and pineapple from the ship.50 people were rescued from 2 life boats the rest were smashed by the waves or washed away. I feel sorry for those people some young some old. But as the saying goes the captain goes down with his ship.why did the captain have to go full speed when he should of slowed down.

wairapa earthquake
The 1855 Wairarapa earthquake occurred on 23 January at about 9 p.m. In Wellington, close to the epicenter, shaking lasted for at least 50 seconds. The magnitude of the earthquake is estimated to have been in the range 8.1-8.3, the most powerful recorded in New Zealand since systematic European colonisation began in 1840.[1[[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1855_Wairarapa_earthquake#cite_note-0|]]] This earthquake was associated with the largest observed movement on a strike-slip fault, maximum 18 metres. It has been suggested that the surface rupture formed by this event helped influence Charles Lyell to link earthquakes with rapid movement on faults.
